Samsung Arbitration Delivers a Major Revenue Boost and Higher Recurring Income
| Metric | Previous Agreement | New Agreement |
|---|---|---|
| Annual recurring revenue | ~$78M/year | ~$131M/year |
| Total deal value (8 years) | — | $1.05 billion |
| 2025 catch-up payment | — | $118M |
An arbitration panel ruled in July 2025 on the royalty terms for InterDigital's patent license with Samsung, one of its largest customers. The new eight-year deal (2023–2030) pays InterDigital 67% more per year than the prior agreement. Because Samsung had only been paying at the old, lower rate since 2023, InterDigital received a $118 million catch-up payment (a lump sum covering the underpaid period) in 2025.
Revenue Dipped Slightly, but Catch-Up Payments Are the Reason
| 2025 | 2024 | |
|---|---|---|
| Total Revenue | $834.0M | $868.5M |
| Catch-up revenue included | $277.4M | $460.1M |
Total revenue fell 4% year-over-year, but that decline is almost entirely explained by the size of catch-up revenue — large one-time payments from newly signed or resolved license deals. In 2024, those payments were unusually high due to the Samsung TV, OPPO, and Lenovo agreements. Stripping those out, the underlying recurring business is growing, supported by 15 new patent license agreements signed in the last 21 months.
Operating Costs Dropped Sharply, Boosting Profitability
| 2025 | 2024 | Change | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total operating expenses | $373.2M | $429.0M | -13% |
| Revenue share costs | $10.1M | $81.3M | -$71.2M |
| IP enforcement costs | $48.9M | $56.2M | -$12.5M |
Total operating expenses fell $55.8 million, driven mainly by a $71.2 million drop in revenue share costs (fees paid to partners who helped secure certain deals, like the 2024 Samsung TV agreement). Legal enforcement costs also fell as the OPPO and Lenovo disputes were resolved. New enforcement actions against Disney and Amazon are ongoing and expected to push legal costs higher in 2026.
Smartphone Market Coverage Reaches 85% Following New China Deals
InterDigital signed new multi-year license agreements with vivo and Honor in 2025, two of China's largest smartphone brands. This brings 8 of the 10 largest global smartphone vendors under license, covering approximately 85% of the entire global smartphone market. Broader coverage reduces revenue risk and strengthens InterDigital's negotiating position with remaining unlicensed vendors.
Cash Position Strengthened Significantly
| Dec 31, 2025 | Dec 31, 2024 | |
|---|---|---|
| Cash, restricted cash & short-term investments | $1.26B | $0.98B |
| Operating cash flow | $544.5M | $271.5M |
Cash on hand grew by $276 million, and operating cash flow doubled year-over-year. The company also holds approximately $1.5 billion in contracted future payments from existing fixed-fee agreements, providing strong revenue visibility. Of the $329.6 million in deferred revenue (cash already collected but not yet recognized as revenue), $193.7 million is expected to flow through the income statement in 2026 alone.
